‘Extreme’ marine heatwave expected for parts of UK

The sea around Britain is getting uncomfortably warm, and scientists are genuinely worried about what comes next.

Researchers at the National Oceanography Centre have flagged what they’re calling an “extreme” marine heatwave building across parts of UK coastal waters this summer. Sea surface temperatures in some areas are running as much as 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average, a deviation that sounds modest until you consider how sensitive marine ecosystems are to even the smallest shifts.

For context, the North Sea and the waters off the southwest of England are particularly affected. These aren’t just warm patches; they’re sustained temperature anomalies that have been building for weeks.

The knock-on effects could be substantial. Warming seas disrupt the tiny plankton that sit at the bottom of the entire marine food chain. Fewer plankton means less food for sand eels, which means less food for puffins, dolphins, and the cod that end up on your Friday night plate. It’s a cascade that starts invisibly and ends up somewhere very visible indeed.

“What concerns us isn’t just the temperature itself, it’s the duration,” one marine biologist familiar with the monitoring data told reporters. “These organisms can cope with a warm week. A warm season is a different matter entirely.”

Seagrass meadows and kelp forests, both critical for carbon storage and as nursery habitats for juvenile fish, are also vulnerable. Bleaching events, more commonly associated with tropical coral reefs, have already been observed in British kelp beds in recent years during previous warm spells.

There’s an economic angle too. The UK fishing industry, already under pressure since Brexit reshaped access agreements, could face disruption if target species shift their ranges northward in search of cooler water. Scottish fishermen reported unusual movements in mackerel stocks during the last significant heat event in 2023.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, though “monitoring” can feel like cold comfort when the water itself is anything but cold.

The bigger question, perhaps, is whether summers like this are becoming the rule rather than the exception, and whether our coastlines are ready for that reality.
