Kim Min-jae: Manchester United eyeing Bayern Munich defender

Manchester United have set their sights on one of the most physically imposing defenders in European football, and if the rumours are true, Ruben Amorim could be about to land a serious statement signing.

Kim Min-jae, the South Korean centre-back who has been nothing short of immense since joining Bayern Munich from Napoli in 2023, is reportedly on United’s shortlist as the club looks to shore up a backline that has creaked badly over the past couple of seasons. The 28-year-old arrived at the Allianz Arena for around £50 million and has only grown in stature since.

Known to fans simply as “the Monster” back in South Korea, Kim is 6ft 3in, reads the game brilliantly, and carries the ball out from the back with genuine authority. He’s not the type of defender who goes missing when the big occasions arrive. Quite the opposite, frankly.

Bayern’s financial situation has made this one worth watching. The Bundesliga giants have been managing costs carefully, and a significant offer from Old Trafford could prove difficult to dismiss outright. United, for their part, are under pressure to deliver meaningful additions after a deeply underwhelming campaign.

Sources close to the situation suggest United’s recruitment team have been tracking Kim for several months, with Amorim understood to be keen on adding a commanding, ball-playing presence to his defensive unit.

It’s also worth considering the competitive angle. Kim has been linked with Real Madrid in the past, and United know full well that dithering on targets of this calibre tends to end one way. The queue forms quickly.

Whether Bayern would even entertain serious negotiations remains the central question. Kim still has years left on his deal, and Munich don’t give up their best players without a fight. A fee north of £60 million would almost certainly be required to get talks moving.

For United supporters who’ve watched their defence ship goals with alarming regularity, the prospect of Kim patrolling the heart of their backline is an exciting one. Whether the club can actually get this done is another matter entirely.

If United are serious, they’ll need to move fast. Players like Kim Min-jae don’t wait around.
