Disorder breaks out in Belfast after man charged over knife attack

Belfast hasn’t seen scenes like this in years. What began as a legal proceeding in a courtroom ended with families grabbing what they could and fleeing their streets as disorder spiralled through parts of the city on Tuesday night.

The unrest broke out after a man was charged in connection with a knife attack, a development that appears to have ignited tensions that were already simmering beneath the surface. Within hours, public transport had been suspended across affected areas, with Translink pulling services as the situation deteriorated rapidly.

Residents described the atmosphere as deeply unsettling. One local woman, who didn’t want to be named, said she bundled her two children into a car and drove to her sister’s house two miles away, not knowing when it would be safe to return. “It just came out of nowhere,” she said. “One minute it was a normal evening.”

Police were deployed in significant numbers, and the PSNI urged people to stay indoors and avoid the affected areas. Officers faced considerable hostility as they attempted to restore order, with reports of objects being thrown and vehicles damaged in the street.

Community leaders were quick to call for calm. Elected representatives from across the political spectrum issued statements condemning the violence, with several pointing out that disorder of this kind serves nobody’s interests and risks setting back years of painstaking community relations work.

It’s a reminder of how fragile peace can still feel in certain parts of Northern Ireland, even a quarter of a century on from the Good Friday Agreement. The causes of last night’s trouble may be specific and localised, but the speed at which it escalated will concern anyone watching.

The charged individual is due to appear in court, and the legal process will now take its course. Whether that’s enough to settle things down on the ground remains to be seen.

The bigger question, perhaps, is what Tuesday night reveals about the underlying pressures in these communities, and whether anyone in authority is genuinely paying attention.
